Waqar Younis set to be new Pakistan coach

Waqar Younis is set to be the new coach of Pakistan after reports emerged that he had accepted a Pakistan Cricket Board offer to take up the position.

"I have received a proper offer from the Pakistan board and I am ready to take on this challenge," Waqar was quoted as telling the Reuters agency.

Waqar played 87 Tests and 262 one-day internationals between 1989 and 2003.

According to reports, his contract takes in all cricket up to and including the 2011 World Cup.

Waqar said:. "I see this job as a big challenge as Pakistan cricket has great talent and potential to deliver top results against all teams."

He replaces Intikhab Alam, who was released early from a two-year contract.

Since 1995, the board has changed its coach 14 times with former England player Bob Woolmer enjoying the longest stint from 2004-07 until his sudden death during the last World Cup in the West Indies.

PCB chairman Ijaz Butt said on Friday foreign consultants would be appointed to assist the new coach on a series-to-series basis when required.

Waqar, who was a bowling coach with the national side from 2006-07, said he was happy with the arrangement and planned to fly to Pakistan imminently to finalise his agreement.

Regarded as one of the finest exponents of reverse swing, Waqar formed a formidable fast-bowling pairing with Wasim Akram, taking 373 Test wickets at an average of 23.56 and 416 at 23.84 in one-day internationals.
