Winter Olympics 2010: Bode Miller fails to make alpine skiing history with fourth medal

Miller, already winner of the full set of gold, silver and bronze here, missed a gate near the start of his first run of the final event, the slalom, and he was far from alone as terrible visibility, a wet snowfall and a tough course saw nearly half the field fail to finish.

Miller said: “It’s the Olympics and we knew it was going to be challenging and tough with everyone skiing 100 per cent. You have to go out of the gate willing to take risks, you don’t start taking risks halfway down – you go out of the gate with the intention of maximising every single turn and unfortunately my ski climbed up on the inside of that rut.”

Asked whether this would mark the end of his glittering career, the 32 year-old said: “I pushed it hard to get here. Now I’m going to take a little break and then make a decision.

Last to go in the 102-strong field, was Kwame Nkrumah-Acheampong, the Milton Keynes-based one-man Ghana ski team who has captured Vancouver’s imagination.

Nkrumah-Acheampong tentatively made it down to lie 53rd of the 54 who successfully negotiated the first run, some 21 seconds behind the intermediate leader.

Offered the biggest cheer of the day, the 'Snow Leopard’ broke into a broad grin and said: “It’s been wonderful and crazy. I’m waiting for my Canadian passport."

Meanwhile, Canada were enjoying a storming penultimate day, adding two more golds in the space of a few minutes, from their men’s speed skating pursuit team and slalom snowboarder Jasey Jay Anderson, to lead the medal table.
