3 artists enchant RAG for `a moment in a lifelong journey’

The Rohtas Art Gallery (RAG) on Monday presented a group show of paintings by three young artists entitled `a moment in a lifelong journey’.

As many as 22 art pieces have been displayed by Asad Hayee, Faisal Asgher and Sheraz Faisal on diverse mediums including graphite on Wasli (handmade paper), mixed-media in miniature styled paintings and others.

The artists came together with works which respond to issues which are of concern to them collectively and individually. These range from the proliferation of menacing explosive objects, to personal narratives and the symbolism of attire.

According to them the political landscape has become more turbulent and uncertain and the artists become more productive and effervescent. Each artist has a strong sense of design and a flair for experimentation.

“This recent body of works which I have assembled is based on the experiences of being a victim of present political and social situation which are caused by terrorist activities during past years all over Pakistan,” says Sheraz Faisal while commenting on his works.

His themes are connected with his city Lahore which has a deep cultural and political significance in the history of the country. He uses the bullets as symbolism for power and mass destruction.

About the miniature styled paintings, Asad Hayee says that “South Asia has strong cultural history and people of the region have played a major role in constructing a strong bond with in a society where social values are preferred and practiced like religious rituals.”

He said, “Being an artist, I am trying to challenge the gender discriminations in my society and I have tried to question the existing norms and values of society.”

The artist used the images of `Tie’ in almost every art pieces, symbolizing his childhood memory of school uniform which is also an essential part of the dress code for a gentleman.
