US donates surveillance equipment to Pakistan

The US has donated eight armoured personnel carriers and surveillance equipment, including binoculars, global positioning systems and night-vision binoculars, to Pakistan to help fight extremists. Donated by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, the equipment would support the Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP) Elite Force professionals who are on the front lines in the fight against extremism, the State Department announced Monday. The vehicles and the equipment were handed over to NWFP Police Inspector General Malik Naveed at a ceremony Monday, it said. The US supports civilian law enforcement in Pakistan through equipment, training, and refurbishment/rehabilitation of police facilities. In 2009 alone, US civilian law enforcement assistance totalled $49,500,000, the State Department said.
